About Kyoto Station Station

Kyoto Station is a modern architectural landmark (designed by Hiroshi Hara, completed 1997) that serves as the nerve center of the ancient capital. Six rail lines converge here: JR Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen (Tokyo in 2h15m, Hiroshima in 1h10m), JR Nara Line (Fushimi Inari in 5 min, Nara in 45 min), JR Sagano/San-in Line (Arashiyama / Saga-Arashiyama in 15 min), JR Biwako/Kyoto Line (Osaka in 15 min, Biwako Lake area), Kintetsu Kyoto Line (Nara in 35 min express), and the Karasuma Subway Line (runs directly into the Karasuma-Oike central district). The station building itself contains a hotel, department store (Isetan), multiple restaurant floors, underground shopping, and a rooftop sky garden. Nearly every major Kyoto temple and shrine is accessible by bus from the station's north exit or by subway within 20 minutes.

🏮 Local tip from a resident:Floor 11 of the Kyoto Station building has a free outdoor sky garden with panoramic mountain views — most visitors never find it. Take the escalators from the main concourse up to the rooftop path and walk along the observation corridor. Best at sunset. The Kintetsu platforms (B1–B2) and JR platforms are separate ticketing systems — make sure you're on the right side when buying tickets.

Transit Convenience

Honest assessment — not a sales pitch

9/10

Tourist convenience rating

Extraordinary Shinkansen access — best station in Japan for multi-city travel. From Kyoto Station: Fushimi Inari by JR (5 min), Arashiyama by JR Sagano (15 min), Nara by JR or Kintetsu (35–45 min). Buses to Kinkaku-ji (30 min), Gion/Higashiyama (20 min), Nijo Castle (25 min). One honest limitation: Gion and the historic Higashiyama district are 20–30 min by transit — for temple-heavy travelers, some prefer staying closer to Gion itself.

THE THOUSAND KYOTO

2 min walkkyoto station9.3(2,100)

200 m from Kyoto Station's Karasuma Central Exit

Opened in 2019 and immediately became Kyoto's benchmark luxury-station hotel. It's 200 m — literally two minutes — from the Karasuma Central Exit of Kyoto Station, making it the best-positioned luxury hotel for Shinkansen travelers. The design is contemporary Japanese minimalism: Kyoto-blue lacquer, bamboo screens, hand-painted washi walls. The Mizuki restaurant on the top floor serves Kyoto-style kaiseki that ranks among the city's top dining experiences.

Local tip: The Mizuki omakase kaiseki dinner requires a reservation weeks ahead, especially in spring (cherry blossom) and autumn (foliage). Book directly when you confirm your hotel — not as an afterthought.

Kyoto Tower Hotel Annex

4 min walkkyoto station8.1(3,800)

3 min from Karasuma Central Exit · Kyoto Tower landmark is directly next door

Budget travelers' best option in central Kyoto. The Annex sits next to Kyoto Tower, 4 minutes on foot from the JR station. Rooms are compact and utilitarian, but they're reliably clean and the location is genuinely central — every bus route in Kyoto runs through this area. There's a coin laundry on-site and a Family Mart literally in the building.

Local tip: The observation deck of Kyoto Tower next door offers one of the better aerial views of the city for ¥900. Most tourists skip it for higher-profile spots — it's rarely crowded.
