About This Guide
Written from inside Japan. Not from a travel agency.
Why This Site Exists
Most Japan travel guides are written by people who visit twice a year with press trip budgets and stay in luxury hotels you'll never book. They haven't stood in the actual ticket queue at Shinjuku Station at 8am. They haven't been the reason a izakaya owner smiled for the first time all evening.
This guide is different. It's written by someone who has lived in Japan — navigating the same train lines, eating at the same neighborhood spots, and learning from years of mistakes that guidebooks never mention.
The goal is simple: help you experience Japan the way a local friend would show you — not a tour operator, not a marketing campaign.
What Makes This Guide Different
1. Station-First Thinking
In Japan, where you stay matters less than which station you're near. We organize everything around train stations because that's how Japan actually works. Your Yamanote line stop will define your entire Tokyo experience.
2. The Human Side of Japan
Japan is famous for its hospitality, but the real warmth comes out when visitors make genuine effort. We teach you the phrases, gestures, and small acts of consideration that transform you from "tourist" to "guest."
3. No Sugarcoating
Some tourist spots are genuinely overrated. Some areas are better to avoid. Some times of year, certain experiences are miserable no matter how famous they are. We tell you this honestly, because your time and money are valuable.
4. Transparent About Affiliates
This site earns money through affiliate links — primarily hotel bookings and travel products. This is disclosed on every page. Our recommendations are based on genuine experience, not commission rates.
How We Choose What to Recommend
Hotels are recommended based on location convenience, value for money, and the quality of service — particularly the details that matter to first-time Japan visitors. We don't recommend anything we wouldn't suggest to a family member visiting for the first time.
Products like JR Passes and eSIMs are recommended based on actual usage and value. We note when there are better alternatives for specific situations.
Our Principles
Honest, Always
We won't recommend a bad hotel because it pays higher commission. Credibility matters more than any single referral.
Practical, Not Aspirational
Not every traveler has an unlimited budget. We cover budget hostels alongside luxury hotels without judgement.
Local, Not Expat
There's a difference between living in Japan and visiting it. We write from the perspective of someone embedded in the culture.

Start with the stations — your hotel's location will define your Japan experience more than any other decision.
